Novell - The Network Operating System

By M2 | May 3, 2006

NovellThe power of networking, having total control over the way computers speak to one another, share information, make resources available and handle the complexities of user administration - These are just some of the strong suits of Novell.

Novell offers a wide array of applications that allow for a tremendous amount of user productivity. A perfect example is GroupWise, the popular collaboration software that provides users with e-mail, calendaring, instant messaging, task management, and contact and document management functions. As an alternative to Microsoft Exchange, GroupWise has a huge fan base of users that recognize the overall value, functionality, security and reliability. In the words of Novell:

“Novell GroupWise is a complete collaboration software solution that provides information workers with e-mail, calendaring, instant messaging, task management, and contact and document management functions. The leading alternative to Microsoft Exchange, GroupWise has long been praised by customers and industry watchers for its security and reliability.”

Another valuable Novell service offering is Virtual Office. Bundled with earlier versions of Netware and available as a separate download, Virtual Office expands on the functionality of GroupWise:

“At a time when enterprises must do more with fewer people, telecommuting is a smart way to improve productivity. Nearly 32 million people will telecommute this year, and telecommuting’s growth rate has held steady at 7 percent annually for the past decade.” (source: Telecommuting: Making Itself At Home, Information Week) In general, users of network services prefer mobility-even if it’s just the convenience to work at home once in a while. The ability to access network resources from any location-whether it be the main office, a remote or branch office, an Internet kiosk, a hotel, the office of a customer or partner, at home or any station on the Internet-is critical.

Novell Virtual Office provides a tremendous amount of functionality that network users will quickly find themselves growing dependant on. Virtual Office allows for web access to network/office resources from any location including file access, print shares, collaboration tools, Email, applications - all with simple administration for IT managers and administrators.

A valuable feature that Virtual Office makes available is the concept of Virtual Teams. Novell explains the concept as:

“Virtual Teams is Web-based portal technology that allows workers from any location to create teams, organize projects and share information through enhanced collaboration and real-time interaction. With Virtual Teams, employees can conduct meetings on the fly, connect with key team members at any time, and keep business moving without having to be at a specific location. Users who join a Virtual Team, can access shared documents, discussion threads, bookmarks, and a team calendar.”

With advancing network technology, new functionality is a welcome addition to our complicated business environment.  An important point to remember is that there are many options available that meet even the most demanding needs of todays hi-tech computer user.  Due diligence when researching appropriate solutions will definitely ensure that your organizations needs are met.
